BUSINESS VALUATION BRISBANE

What Is Your Business Really Worth?

Knowing your likely market value is one of the most important steps in planning a business sale. It provides a realistic basis for timing, negotiation, retirement planning and deciding whether improvements should be made before going to market.
Magellan Business Sales provides confidential business appraisals for Brisbane and Queensland owners considering a sale. Our focus is not simply on producing a theoretical number. We assess how prospective buyers are likely to view the business, which risks may affect the multiple and where strategic value may exist.

WHAT COULD YOUR BUSINESS BE WORTH?

Request a confidential appraisal to discuss sustainable earnings, likely valuation range, buyer appetite and the factors that could increase or reduce your sale price.

How Businesses Are Commonly Valued

For many established privately owned businesses, valuation starts with sustainable earnings—often EBITDA or another maintainable earnings measure—and applies a market multiple. However, two businesses producing the same profit can command very different multiples.

THE VALUATION MULTIPLE REFLECTS BOTH OPPORTUNITY AND RISK. FACTORS THAT COMMONLY INFLUENCE IT INCLUDE:

Revenue and EBITDA scale

Historic growth and earnings stability

Recurring or contracted revenue

Customer concentration

Management depth and owner dependence

Quality of systems and financial reporting

Competitive differentiation

Sector outlook and buyer appetite

Working capital and capital expenditure requirements

Supplier risk

Employee retention and key-person exposure

Compliance and regulatory risk

THE KEY QUESTION IS NOT SIMPLY “WHAT MULTIPLE DOES THIS INDUSTRY SELL FOR?” BUT

“What multiple would a buyer apply to this particular business?”

How We Appraise Your Business

Three steps help establish a defensible view of likely market value.

01

Step 1: Determine sustainable earnings

Reported accounting profit may need to be adjusted to reflect the earnings a buyer can reasonably expect after acquisition. Depending on the business, adjustments may include genuinely non-recurring costs, abnormal owner remuneration, discretionary expenses or other items that require commercial assessment. The objective is to establish a defensible maintainable earnings figure that can withstand buyer and due-diligence scrutiny—not to maximise add-backs artificially.

02

Step 2: Assess business quality and risk

The valuation multiple reflects both opportunity and risk. We weigh the factors listed above, from scale, growth and recurring revenue through to customer concentration, owner dependence, systems, supplier risk and compliance.

03

Step 3: Consider the buyer universe

A business may have one value to a financial buyer and a different value to a strategic buyer. A corporate acquirer might be able to cross-sell services, enter Queensland quickly, consolidate facilities, acquire technical capability or remove duplicated overhead. Those synergies can affect what the business is worth to that buyer.

Business Valuation for Owners Not Ready to Sell

An appraisal can be useful well before a sale. If your target exit is one to three years away, understanding today’s likely value creates a benchmark. You can then focus on the specific improvements most likely to influence future buyer demand, valuation and deal structure.

WHAT CAN INCREASE THE VALUE OF A BUSINESS?

A higher valuation is usually the result of lower perceived risk and stronger confidence in future earnings.

Market Appraisal vs Formal Valuation

A market appraisal prepared for sale planning is different from an independent formal valuation required for litigation, tax, family law or certain statutory purposes. Magellan’s appraisal work is designed to help owners understand likely market value in the context of a potential business sale and buyer market.

Market appraisal ≠ formal valuation.

What Information Helps Us Appraise a Business?

The exact information depends on the company, but an initial appraisal will generally benefit from:

Why Getting the Valuation Right Matters

Avoid under-selling

Without a credible view of value, an owner may accept an approach that materially understates what the wider buyer market could pay.

Avoid over-pricing

An unrealistic asking price can discourage capable buyers, prolong the campaign and weaken negotiating leverage.

Plan before sale

If current value is below the owner’s objective, an appraisal can highlight which value drivers may be improved before going to market.

Improve negotiation

A well-supported valuation position helps frame buyer discussions and provides a commercial basis for responding to offers.

Understand deal structure

The highest headline offer is not necessarily the best offer if it relies heavily on earn-outs, deferred payments or aggressive adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A confidential appraisal can be completed as a planning exercise without commencing a sale campaign.
There is no single multiple that applies to every business in an industry. Scale, quality, growth, recurring revenue, risk and buyer appetite all matter.
It depends on the industry and business model, but sustainable earnings are commonly central for established private businesses. In some recurring-revenue or high-growth sectors, buyers may also consider revenue-based metrics.
No. A valuation is a view of likely market value, not a guaranteed sale price. The ultimate result depends on buyer competition, due diligence, timing, deal terms and negotiation.
Start by identifying the business-specific risks and value drivers that buyers will focus on. Improvements should then be prioritised according to likely impact and the time available before sale.
